TOLEDO, Ohio – Landon Cox wrapped up a triple-championship campaign with the Midwest Thunder Quarter Midget Racing Series in a thrilling two-day finale weekend at the Toledo Quarter Midget Racing Club.
Held Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 13-14, Cox drove to victory in three of the five classes he entered, winning in Senior Honda, Light 160, and Senior Animal.
The Light 160 feature win was critical, as it allowed Cox to secure the division title by the slimmest of margins. He took the 40-lap feature from the pole to edge championship rival Ellis Mendoza, who finished third, by just six points in the final tally.
That was one of two wins Cox collected during the Saturday portion of the program, as he also won the 40-lap Senior Honda main event after starting from the outside of the front row.
It capped a cruise to championship glory in that class for Cox by 34 points over Weston Kudner.
A sixth-to-second run in the 40-lap Light World Formula feature finished off Cox’s Saturday, as he moved forward but couldn’t quite catch winner Bryce Koerner, who stormed from ninth to take that victory.
Cox ended the year second in Light World Formula points, 20 behind champion Cam Lindsay.
Sunday’s action brought with it races in both Senior Animal and World Formula Mod, headlined by Cox going from pole to victory lane in Senior Animal, dominating that 40-lap event.
His World Formula Mod run was slightly less fruitful, but he still earned a top five finish in fifth place after starting the 40-lapper in fourth.
Yet again, a win was crucial to Cox locking down a title, as he edged sixth-finishing Cam Lindsay by a scant five points to earn the Senior Animal crown. Cox finished third in World Formula Mod points.
With two intense points battles ultimately celebrated in victory lane, Cox was both elated and relieved to finish off both three wins and three championships on the final day of the season.
“It’s really big for us,” said Cox. “There’s a lot of really great drivers in the Midwest Thunder [Series] and it takes a lot to earn even one championship. To have three of them is incredible for our year.
“[Crew chief] Nick Loden has given me fast cars and taught me so much; he used to do this, so it helps having someone talking to me that used to drive quarter midgets and knows them like he does,” Cox added. “We had fast cars all weekend at Toledo as well, and three wins shows what we’ve been able to do throughout the year.”
Cox’s three Midwest Thunder titles add to a hugely successful year thus far for the 11-year-old from Monroe, Ga., who earned his first NASCAR Youth Series national event win in July at Castle Rock (Wash.) Quarter Midget Club and backed it up with an August national win at Richmond (Va.) Raceway.
Thanks go out to Cox’s parents, Danny and Jessica Cox, as well as Race Face Brand Development, the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation, Ultimate QM, Flash Racing Engines, and CB Partners for their support of his quarter midget racing endeavors.
